The present government has taken a decisive step to amend the Arts Council of Sri Lanka Act, passed in 1952, to suit the current needs and new trends in the arts sector. This process was initiated in response to the requests made by experts in the arts sector and various parties for several decades, emphasizing the need to update this Act.
Accordingly, the new revised draft bill was prepared as a result of long and extensive discussions held with experts and professionals in the field after the present government came to power. The final draft was presented to the members of the Arts Council of Sri Lanka and a special program was held 15th May at the auditorium of the Ministry of Buddhasasana, Religious and Cultural Affairs to solicit their final suggestions and opinions.
The event, which was held under the patronage of the Minister of Buddhasasana, Religious and Cultural Affairs, Dr. Hiniduma Sunil Senevi, was attended by the Chairman of the Arts Council of Sri Lanka, Mr. Keerthi Welisarage, as well as a group of sub-panel members and officials. The Minister, who spoke at the event, emphasized that the primary objective of the government is to build a more progressive legal structure that protects the rights of artists, opens new avenues for the development of arts, and meets the needs of the modern art world.
