Anomaa Rajakaruna has travelled extensively in Sri Lanka documenting the lives of community groups, particularly the lives of women and children in these communities and has addressed issues such as women in armed conflict, displacement, sexual harassment and violence against women among others. She uses poetry, photography and documentary film for expression and has won several awards for her work nationally and internationally. Her poetry collection ‘Gothirika Premaya’ (2000) is one of the most critically acclaimed women’s poetry collections in Sri Lanka. She has published a short story collection ‘Kadadasi Oru’ (1983) and have written over 15 screen plays for television. Rajakaruna is the first female editor of a cinema journal in in Sri Lanka and she edited ‘Chithrapata’ a Quarterly Cinema Magazine published by the National Film Corporation of Sri Lanka and since 2011 she edits a Quarterly Cinema Journal, ‘ ‘14 – Prakashanayata Awakashayak’. Rajakaruna worked in the editorial board of ‘Eya’ Women’s Magazine, edited several issues of ‘Partners in Progress’ – Annual Journal of the National Committee on Women in Sri Lanka and wrote a column on Gender issues to ‘Balaya’ magazine. She is the Festival Director of Jaffna International Cinema Festival and Founder of Agenda 14 Short Film Festival’ in Colombo. Rajakaruna curated the European Film Festival in Sri Lanka during the last 10 years and has served as a juror at over 20 national and international 25 film festivals. Her skills as a photographer won her the opportunity to work both at the UN conference on women in Beijing in 1995 and the Beijing +5 conference in New York in 2000. She has over 15 solo and group photography exhibitions to her credit. She was awarded ‘The Bunka Prize’ for Special Achievement in Photography in 2002 by the Japan-Sri Lanka Friendship Cultural Fund, National Hounors ‘Kalasuri’ by the President of Sri Lanka in 2005 and Chevalier de l’ordre national du merit, The National honour of the Republic of France by the President of France in 2012. She holds a Master of Arts Degree from University of Kelaniya.
